Boat People

Camps in Hong Kong

Between the 1970s and 1990s, over 230,000 Vietnamese asylum seekers (often called “Boat People”) arrived in Hong Kong and were held in a dozen refugee camps – including former military barracks, industrial buildings, uninhabited islands, and retired ferry vessels. Although there are numerous news reels and articles about the Vietnamese refugee camps, there is no plaque, no signs, and no demarcation of the camps in Hong Kong today. The documents about these camps are scattered and fragments.

Supported by the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust (2021-2022), this site presents a comprehensive list of the camps where Vietnamese asylum seekers were detained in Hong Kong.
