Chi Ma Wan is an area on the Lantau Island. The site for the upper camp has been a prison since 1958. It was one of the first “open prison” in Hong Kong. In 1979, Chi Ma Wan was one of the first sites to be considered as a camp for Vietnamese asylum seekers.
Chi Ma Wan (Lower) was a proposed built camp which first consisted of 10 huts. It housed mostly North Vietnamese refugees who took longer time for resettlement. Some stayed in the camp for more than 2 years.
In 1994, both camps were converted to detention and correctional facilities. In the early 2000s plans were made to rebuilt and expand the facilities, but the plans have been postponed due to discovery of Tang dynasty relics on the sites. Now Chi Ma Wan Lower Camp is one of the most visible surviving camp structures.
