1988-8

Close camp

Less tha 2,000 refugees

In1988, the Hong Kong government also employed five passenger ferries from the Yau Ma Tei Ferry Company as detention centres. These were ferries built in the 1950s. The ferries were or were about to be decommissioned in the late

1980s.

At that time, the Canton Road Godowns have already been closed down. Therefore, these ferries were used as reception centres, alongside the Green Island Reception Centre. Each ferry held about 400 asylum seekers, until spaces in other camps were founded. These ferries were

docked at Stonecutters Island in Kowloon, a military base.
